October 1st, 2017
It's the first day of Down syndrome Awareness month and this girl has something to say...
Over the next 31 days we will be helping you to learn all sorts of things about Down syndrome - some of them you'll know and some of them you may not, some you might just need reminding of!
Because it's the 1st, we want to remind you about person first language. Emma isn't Down syndrome. She has Down syndrome. There's a difference! It's a part of who she is, and not the only thing. Some phrases make me cringe- Down's baby, one of them, those people, etc. People with Down syndrome are exactly that - people with Down syndrome. It's likely that the only thing they have in common is the extra chromosome (we'll talk about that another day!)
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the month of October! It means extra pictures of Emma
😉
