How fitting that I forgot to post this yesterday...
People with Down syndrome have an extremely high chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease. There’s a protein that is made by one of the genes in chromosome 21 that is linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of this chromosome, they produce more of the protein. This protein builds up in the brain and causes Alzheimer’s. Now that it’s known, studies are being undertaken to block the protein, or reduce it.
