What is Down syndrome? It’s a genetic condition where, at conception, 3 copies of chromosome 21 are present. It’s unknown whether it comes from the egg or the sperm, but I don’t want to know - because neither of us wants to give the other one credit for how awesome our daughter is!!
There are 3 types of Down syndrome. Classic (I think it’s called this, I’m not sure!) is where every cell in the body contains the extra chromosome. This is the type that Emma has (well, they tested 5 cells and each one had it so they didn’t test any more). The next type is Mosaic - where not every cell has the extra chromosome. The last type is translocation, where the extra copy (or part thereof) of the 21st chromosome is attached to a different chromosome. Translocation can be passed down through generations.
My research suggests that boys with Down syndrome have a 50/50 chance of being infertile. Girls with Down syndrome have a higher chance of being fertile. Couples with Down syndrome can have children, and those children have a higher chance of having Down syndrome, but still may not. As to whether people with Down syndrome should be parents... well... you don’t need a licence to have kids, and we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it with Emma. It’s no-one else’s business!
I decided to post early today because I mopped myself into a corner, and that corner happens to contain the couch, so I had to sit for half an hour and wait for the floor to dry!! #winning #atlife #andwinningthekidkackpot
Also Em is at daycare today so no new photo, but I found this gem in the 100s we took the other day... spotted herself on the selfie camera, so had to make faces!!
