When the numbers align...

Today, Emma is 21 months old. There's 3 months until her birthday.

I like 21, and I like 3 - because she's got 3 copies of chromosome 21. Also, 1 plus 2 is 3.

This means that today... I'm launching this blog!!!

It's the perfect day, the perfect combination, for a perfect girl.

The name of the blog came to me in a dream, a dream I had of Emma on her 21st birthday, at her book signing... because she'd taken over the blog her mum had started and was famous. Of course.

All of the October stuff was written in October of this year, 2017, for Down syndrome awareness month. The first few posts were written when Emma was born, and then a few months old. I found them when I went to set up this blog. People have been telling me for months that I have to write, and I know that I have to write, but the pressure of not having it perfect has made me reluctant to do it. No more.

Today, my girl is 21 months old and she is THRIVING. I know this, because tonight I spent 40 minutes trying to settle her to sleep. 40 minutes of screaming, of lashing out, of cuddles and missed breaths. 40 minutes of her not wanting to go to sleep, but being so tired that she fought it with every fibre of her being. That's what kids her age do, and it's exhaustingly amazing.

This girl is fierce. She knows her mind. She wants to be herself, do herself, live herself. She's not afraid to push people away who try to get in her face. If she lifts her arms for you to pick her up... you'd better do it, because you won't get a second opportunity. She's on her feet so much more than she was a month ago. She's so unsure about walking, so cautious when there's nothing to hold. She doesn't like change. She is cheeky, and full of personality. She has her Daddy wrapped around her little finger, and her Pop and Granny are not far behind. She loves music, loves dancing, loves us singing to her. Her favourite song changes daily. Her verbal communication consists of a single sound 'ma', but this takes on many forms and she is easily understood. Recently, she's started pointing her finger at something and saying 'ooo' - this might mean that she's counting, or pointing something out, or trying to divert your attention from the biscuit she's hoarding in the other hand.

There are so many wonderful things about this girl. When you stop thinking about all the things she CAN'T do, you see the things that she CAN. You see Emma for who she is - just a girl, standing in front of the world, asking them to say hello.

Photo credit goes to Jenna - who came to our final calisthenics concert to photograph the girls, and snapped a few of the star of the show!!
